The Regulators - Original Jamaican Ska

In the late 1950s, a new kind of music was born in Kingston Jamaica: Ska. A swinging mix of Jamaican folk music and rhythm & blues, but also with other black music influences as soul, gospel, boogie-woogie and jazz. From the mid-1960s, the swinging rhythms of ska gradually gave way to the sultry grooves of rocksteady and reggae. In the late 1970s ska enjoyed a renewed popularity, this time in Europe. British bands such as Madness, The Specials, The Selecter, The English Beat and Bad Manners played a modern, up-tempo ska. A number of bands meanwhile remained to play traditional, old-school ska, including The Regulators. Inspired by the legendary likes of Justin Hinds, Rico Rodriquez, Laurel Aitken, Prince Buster, Desmond Dekker, Derrick Morgan, Lord Tanamo, and The Skatalites, the band formed at the end of the 1980s, aiming to let the old years come alive again. In the past twenty years, The Regulators have had the honor of performing together with artists and bands such as The Skatalites, The Specials, Desmond Dekker, Derrick Morgan, Judge Dread, The Aggrolites, and The New York Ska Jazz Ensemble. A number of tracks have appeared on compilation cd’s. The Regulators currently consist of eight musicians hailing from the Dutch ska, jazz & reggae scene.
